Modes of interpreting - Consecutive interpreting
- While the source-language speaker is speaking, the interpreter listens carefully and takes concise notes. When the speaker pauses, the interpreter uses their memory and notes to reproduce the speech in the target language, including tone and language level. This mode is perfectly suited for a small audience.
- Simultaneous interpreting
- For simultaneous interpreting, the interpreter sits in a sound-proof booth. The interpreter listens to the speaker via earphones and translates into a microphone. The audience hears the speech via earphones plugged in a receptor. This interpreting mode is much less time consuming than consecutive interpreting and is suitable for large audiences.
- Whispered interpreting
- Whispered interpreting is the most suitable mode when only one or two persons do not speak the working language of the meeting. It consists of literally whispering the translation of the speaker’s verbal communication in the ear of the participant. This mode does not require any equipment and is ideal for small groups during meetings or visits.

According to international standards, it is recommended to hire at least two interpreters per event. This way, they can switch every 30 minutes and use their break to rest and concentrate.
